13th FINA World Championships Rome '09

I guess being jobless that I am (more than a week now) I am an easy target for distractions and look what sort of distraction I found?!? ->

Well I had one eye on him since Beijing '08. I knew about his TV appearances and marijuana bong picture. However, I had too much going, what with, being snowed in, moving house, career issues and Paris plans among others, I had a lot on my hands. However, I always browse articles concerning him.

Of course I knew he was well on his way to this year's World Champs in Rome (a place I hope to be visiting really, really soon!). And I really want to watch the events especially the ones where he's competing.

I mean, come on, everyone loves a winner. I myself finds it exhilarating to read, watch and listen to winning stories. And to see it unfold right before my eyes (albeit just on a my laptop) to me, that will be a priviledge. It just lights up something inside me, aside from inspiring me and the trail of happy, giddy and adrenaline that ensue doing this I am really hooked! It is such a natural high...something you would like to keep experiencing, if not stay on forever.

Phelps' first event was the 400-m Men's Team Relay. He went into the water first and gave a very average performance using the 'windmill stroke', the good thing is his team mates stepped up to the plate and they finished with the gold anyways. It was a great viewing experience. I am once again hooked! I fully intend to see all the swimming events until the end of the meet - I hope to witness every victory and listen to the commentaries...and watch the crowd go wild. It's just great...had I known about this at an early age I would have struggled to be a sports person - maybe even an olympic athlete!

But let's not get carried away, I have my fun this way now, and somehow, it is enough to keep me going after my own goals and keep me working real hard to overcome my own life's monsters, best times, competition, and critics. It makes me persevere towards each milestone and determined to always step up my pace and performance.

In fact, I hereby declare myself not just a Phelps Phan, but a swimming enthusiast now. Really, I don't blame them for their passion for the sport, because if an expectator such as myself (who can't even swim to save her life) gets this kind of positive impact just by watching, what more if you're actually the one diving into the water with everyone cheering on!? What a sport!

1 out of 5 so far...

I did one of the 5 things I had set myself to do this year. And to me, that in itself was a feat.

Celebrating my birthday in a place where people expect you to 'be in a couple', really was a bit of a risk given my present status but it was nonetheless, brilliant.

The whole experience is going down on my books as the one of the best ever, as well as the best birthday ever - but in the end, it's not the actually being there that made the experience so high up there in the richter scale of life shaking experiences.

Coming into this year, I was really, really, excited - for reasons I didn't know at the time. I must admit, that the first part of this year was a real struggle for me.

Professionally, it went downhill so steeply it left me gasping for air. I went through a period of unexplained depression, but quickly after which, the reason was revealed. I came into a rocky patch and I believe I am still dealing with it currently. Being in Paris amidst this difficult times proves how much more out there is waiting to be discovered by myself. How much more I can do, if I want it bad enough and worked hard enough and prayed with all my heart.

Sorry to be emotional, but I've seen Eiffel Tower in movies/tv series countless of times. And I loved seeing it through the lens of some high tech camera...it paints a grand picture of a place that represents romance, wealth and luxury - the home town of Louis Vuitton. It was quite out of my reach, and it should have remained as such, had I not done my part.

It was an achievement to be there even for just a few days, to celebrate my birthday. It meant that I can do just about anything I set heart and soul to achieve. I've made a few more goals/targets after I came back from Paris. And I can't wait to see them finally coming into life. However, the trek towards that counts as much as actually being there and achieving them. It's always difficult to get things started and I believe I am on this phase right now. But hey, that is another topic altogether. For this one, I just would like to share something I learned through this all, there are no limits, anything is possible. We just need to find the right peices of the puzzle and get it to form the picture we want. Thank God for this gift - another year of life, of struggles, and achievements (i hope). ;p

looking back and looking forward

It has been the same every time the end of a year comes around, it somehow forces me to look back to what I had done as well as makes me anxious to what is yet to come. I've always been fond of countdowns - don't ask me why. And for this post I would do two - the Top 5 of my life changing events for 2008 and the Top 5 things that I will do for 2009.

2008 - my life's Top 5

#5. My first ever visit to London
A big girl in a big city, it was an experience to remember. Now that I live 20 minutes away, I can go and visit any time I want - and I am now more confident to tackle the underground and the crowd. However, I will never forget the very first time.

#4. Our BIG move to Kent
With all the difficulty that this brought me, and the humbling experiences that I endured that came with it, it definitely made me a better person. It was so hard that I don't even want to move ever again! Although I have fallen in love with Sevenoaks from when I first set foot here - living here is just absolutely amazing. I've never lived in the high end villages in Manila so I never expected nor even dreamt of actually living in one of UK's poshest towns. Mum's always saying that its soooo expensive here. And she's right, but I truly love the charm of the town. I enjoy living right at the High Street on top of a boutique. I enjoy sitting by our kitchen window and watch the robins. Oh, and the chipmunks busily gathering acorns ever so passionately as the autumn leaves fall and gather on the ground.

#3. Starting on a New Job - Twice this year
I've always enjoyed job searching, it always felt like finding the gold pin in a haysack. It always makes me feel efficient and organised somehow. Starting a new job can be an out of this world experience. Because I never know what to expect, I always feel a sense of forboding and anxiety. Although its good anxiety, coupled with excitement and glee. I've been blessed with 2 really meaningful jobs this year. I learned that working with charity may be something that I would like to do for the rest of my life.

#2. Accomplishing my Master's Certificate
No need to explain, although I decided not to pursue the diploma level of my masters, I feel that this is always going to be an open pathway for me, something that I can always choose to take if I ever face a crossroad in the future. I'll always see myself as an eager student, I love to learn. I know, when the right time comes I will walk around a campus again with books and research works in tow.

#1. Post Grad Visa
Gosh! The building of anxiety or whether or not I will be approved had been withering and exhausting. It led me to explore and pursue other possibilities such as coming and living in other countries. Come to think of it I was offered an English teaching job both in China and Siberia - can you believe it? I also was shortlisted for an interview in Maersk a global company based in Denmark!!! Although, in the end I guess it's fate that I stay in the UK - these things made me realise that the world really is my oyster if I choose it to be. Despite all the hardships in life and all the fears of devastation in this earth great things can be found when we search for it.

2008 had been a very fruitful year for me indeed, I feel that my perspective and outlook has changed. The top 5 life changing events that I've chosen was based on the impact that it made on my life and it's long term effect. Now that I am reminiscing on each experience, I realise that the hardships I encountered is commensurate to it's end result's impact on me in the end. I guess it's true that difficulty is all part of the chase. As chasing something gives me a sense of purpose and motivation. Having something to work tirelessly on, to hope for and to patiently wait for is the core of life. Without them, I'll definitely be lost.

I am very excited for the year 2009, despite the scare of recession and general feeling of depression throughout the world - I feel very positive about it. I feel that 2009 will be even better that 2008 had been for me. And since I've never really believed in new year's resolutions - because they end up being forgotten by me anyway, I find it better to start the year being organised and well planned. I have a lot of plans and hopes for this coming year. So here they are, the Top 5 things I would definitely aim to do this 2009.

2009 - My top TO DO list

#5. By the end of 2009 I should have at least £3000 in savings.
I'm setting my target amount to what I think is reasonable considering my other plans. The main point is that I do intend to save - contrary to what many people see me as (my parents at the forefront). It's true that I can be a shopaholic and a spending whim that happens all to often but I also know the importance of saving. Not for the things I want to spend on like travel and designer brands, but you know, saving for the sake of saving. I think that since I'm not getting any younger not is a good a time as any to commence on my lifesavings.

#4. I will celebrate my 1st year anniversary in my current job.
I've become a butterfly of sorts in my professional life - I've hopped from job to job without intending to. I've thought way back when I was younger that when I do start to work it would be with the same company and in the same profession for the entirety of my working life. Boy, was I ever wrong!
As much as I love job hunting, and all the excitement and hoorah of starting a new job and meeting new people each time, I've come to a point in my life wherein I would very much appreciate stability and a bit of certainty. I know, I know, nothing in life will ever be certain. But, I would really like to stay in my job long enough for me to actually see my hard work paying off, for my efforts to actually make a difference. And although a lot of forces in this world are out of my control, I will do everything in my power to stay in my current profession.

#3.Visit Theresa in DUBAI
This is one of those that I referred to in #5. Travel is expensive but this is something I hope to do in my life. To travel to as many places as possible - at least once for each one. The world has so many things to boast, it's beauty is so varied and diverse it would be a great shame not to see a bit of its wonderful places.
Aside from the obvious reason that I would really like to see my best friend who I haven't seen in ages, I would also like to know if there are future opportunities here. I am planning my visit by the end of Spring 2009. Perhaps April or May. And I really am so excited. I can't wait!

#2. See the view from the top of Eiffel Tower.
I've read about Paris from the romance novels I read tirelessly as a teen. And since I set foot in the UK I have felt the inclination to visit the capital of France. Being here made me feel that anything is possible. My co-workers before would tell me that all is possible if I'm determined enough - I believe them, and I am! I would be thrilled to see this happen. And I would really, really do what it takes to make this a reality.

#1. I will help Hydz come visit.
My parent's second daughter had finally voiced interest to see what it's like here. And I will support her all the way. Although this TO DO is not up to me entirely, as she can still change her mind, I just feel that whatever assistance I can offer to make this happen if she indeed wants to, I would definitely do. I would really like to have my sister here so she can see first hand what it's like to be here. It will be a life changing experience for her I'm sure.

In addition to these, being the shopaholic that I am, I decided to do a top 5 of things I would like to invest on. They aren't actually part of to do, because some of them (or maybe all of them, come to that!) may be just wishful thinking but I would love to be able to buy my top 5 most coveted items for 2009. Oh...these are in no particular order. To me they are all in one level of wanting... (wink, wink)

* new cellphone - a toss between an 8mp camera phone with touch screen Samsung and the reliability of Sony Ericsson 8mp slide unit.

* an LV luggage or city bag

* a laptop

* a nice watch

* jewelry set

haha! again....this is just a wishlist. Ain't I very wishful and aiming really high for 2009? like I've said, I have a really positive feeling about 2009. I have real high hopes and am uber excited!!!

Sorry I Can't Resist

As per the title, you'd have to indulge me some more.

I've just come to these now and again, I just couldn't ignore the nagging impulse that enveloped my entire being.

<----This one is his first time back in his element after the olympics in beijing. The articles all said he looked so exhausted but as soon as he was reunited with the pool he was just perfect. This was taken at the YMCA school I'm not really sure... and they were extending their swimming facilities I think. Or something like that. Ha Ha. You have guessed. I wasn't paying that much attention on the article's details. I just wanted to know where he was.

On this next one, I uploaded this because I soooooo envy the girl. She is on a swim team damn it!. I am the one here in dire need of swimming lessons. ahahahaha! Kidding aside, don't you just wish she was you?

I find this one waaaaaay coooool!! Chart busting Coolness, indeed!
I love Mickey. I love Michael.
Just look at how much Minnie was blushing at the sides! (im pretty sure she wishes to be in the car instead of mickey-as he always steal the show anyway)

I think this pic was after the Athens 2004 Olympics. And not one from his recent Disney visit. But who cares? Minnie sure is a lucky mouse - she seems too be taking advantage too - with her hand touching his torso and all that. (lols! you must really think I'm deranged to even notice, but I did, so shoot me.)

I love this one sooo much. Of all the girls I've seen him hanging out with - or even just having a picture taken with. Minnie is the one I approve of the most (not that anyone's asking).
They look so good together. Just like a red-carpet arrival at the Oscars or even a date to the prom. This picture sure tops it all. Well, at least until I find a better one. (which, I'm thinking is not at all impossible as he's all over the US these days - VMA Music Awards, Saturday Night Live and HBO Series 'Entourage' included; and still counting as we speak! should we even be surprised if he decides to crossover to the dark side? ie. hollywood-y? ) Although, there's always the oddity that I get tired of stalking him - news-wise, that is. (even if I did in the end, the important thing is that I had fun while it lasted)

I had a great laugh while doing this post - even if it all sounded gush-y and stupid. It didn't require the intelligence of a rocket scientist nor the effort of a gold miner but it gave me satisfaction in a peculiar way.

So no judgement needed, ok? I get a little crazy at times. But it's me dealing, coping and escaping. I'm just doin' my thang.

*** again, no copyright infringement intended as i do this for personal consumption and enjoyment

Keeping Face (or the effort to do so)

1. Who doesn't love a guy who knows how to appreciate the All-American double cheeseburger?

2. In action.

3. Golden Boy

4. Typical day - on the way to training

5. It's my way - or Michael Phelps Way

6. Don't you just adore a guy with a healthy sense of humor?

7. Ha. Ha. Ha. "You were saying I can't get the 8 Golds?" Ha. Ha. Ha.

8. Sheer concentration or doping thru iPod?

9. Honestly, Need I say more?

10. "Don't be afraid of the water, I'll save you if you drown."

Right.

Obviously, I've moved on.

I mean. As far as obsessions go.

Just recently I created a post discussing my obsessions--I think it was in June -- and believe you me that I can't even bare to read that post now -- and much less look at the pictures of Wu Chun. I've deleted all of his pictures from my laptop (so this is perhaps the only place I can see them unless I start tracking them around the web again) because as I've said I've jumped off the Wu Chun wagon.

Apparently, I've climbed on a new one. That is -- the wagon of "The Greatest Olympian Ever".
So since the olympics I've busied myself going through the haysack of article archives. (CNN, MSNBC, BBC, New York Times, Sports Illustrated, Baltimore Sun, etc.) And I had the most fun reading what they (the writers) said about him from years and years ago. At first I nipped the budding temptation to repost them or download them to my hard drive. However, what begun as an interest turned into a ritual quite instantaneously -- I had to keep coming back to the same articles to re-read them because they bring the most stupendous smile/s to my face. (Sad, and pathetic I know. But hey, whatever ticks for me, ticks for me.)

And I know, I know. I'd get off this obsession and be embarassed by all this in the end, but right this very moment -- I couldn't care any less. So, I've horded his nicest pictures into my laptop and turned them into my wallpaper and screen saver. And hey, I wasn't staring at his body most of the time -- shame on you for even thinking that. To me the attraction is the 1/3 goofy, 1/3 dorky and 1/3 boyish smile (and laughs come to that). And to top it off - the color of his eyes are a mystery to me. I'm pretty sure its dark but I could have sworn I saw them light-glinting gold (just like Edward in the book Twilight by Stephanie Meyer).

Oh well, I know whatever I say to defend myself I sound very teen-y bopper-y with a giant crush -- so I'd just say...'Nuff said on that.

What I was really wanting to do with this post is to upload my favourite pictures of him. (for when I've gotten off his bandwagon and deleted the whole lot from my laptop, or for like 10 years from now and I want to have a good laugh at myself - like I said, my purpose for maintaining this blog is mainly self-serving anyway.)

I think I did that exactly... Along with a half-hearted attempt to rationalize my irrational actions :)

*Note. sources of the pictures - i cannot recall, but quite obviously they aren't my own shots. Nor have I the intention to claim such a preposterous thought.

Media Frenzy

This one's from the New York Times

Phelps Says Next Goal

Is a Return to Normalcy

Published: August 18, 2008

BEIJING — A few dozen photographers lunged toward the stage where the swimmer Michael Phelps sat Monday morning, their surge reminiscent of Phelps’s finishing charge two days earlier in the final of the 100-meter butterfly.

The four security officers who escorted Phelps to his seat were helpless to turn back the cresting wave. In the front row, Phelps’s mother, Debbie, switched seats to get out of the way.

Phelps, as unflappable as he was while winning eight gold medals, laughed at the commotion. The photographers, reacting to Phelps’s expressiveness, pressed even closer.

The first days of the rest of Phelps’s life as a sports icon have been a trip. It is not unlike a trans-Atlantic flight: tiring, thrilling and a little turbulent.

The question-and-answer session included journalists from The Harvard Lampoon, The Hollywood Reporter and a cheeky gentleman from New Zealand, a nonmedalist in swimming here, who, when called on, delivered a stand-up routine around the theme of Phelps’s greediness.

Phelps was asked to describe love and weigh in on whether light is a particle or a wave. His answer to both was, “I have no idea.”

Phelps, who won six gold medals and two bronzes at the 2004 Athens Olympics, had some idea how big Michael mania is in the United States. He said he had received a phone call from President Bush and more than 4,000 messages on his BlackBerry in the 24 hours after he won his eighth gold medal.

President Bush, he said, told him he made everyone in America proud. “The biggest thing he said was, ‘Give your mother a hug and say the president sent it,’ ” Phelps said.

He heard that Bruce Springsteen, before playing “Born in the U.S.A.” at a concert in Jacksonville, Fla., dedicated the song to him.

Never mind that Phelps’s tastes run more toward hip-hop than rock. “It’s amazing,” he said, adding, “Every time I read a text message I’m smiling.”

In the course of the media session that lasted 36 minutes, Phelps painted a vivid picture of the bunker from which he had just emerged. During the nine days of competition, his focus was so keen he did not notice until Sunday that the exterior of the aquatics site, the Water Cube, is illuminated in a kaleidoscope of colors at night. “I had no idea,” he said.

Phelps talked about not seeing his mother except at the pool, and eating pasta and pizza when what he really craved was a big, juicy cheeseburger. He said that now that he was done swimming, he was looking forward to being able to eat whatever he wanted.

He also has a stack of Baltimore Ravens press clippings to devour. Phelps, an ardent fan of the N.F.L., has not followed the news from the Ravens’ training camp this month.

“I’m excited for the football season to start,” he said, “and hopefully it’ll be a good season for the Ravens.”

The 23-year-old Phelps put on a cheerful face, but in an interview later, away from the cameras’ glare, his fatigue showed. His eyes were dull and he sat slumped in a chair, with his legs crossed underneath him.

He was operating on five hours of sleep. “I need a lot more than that,” he said. Phelps added: “I’m very tired right now. But it’s fun.”

From here, Phelps will travel to London, site of the 2012 Olympics, for an appearance connected to Sunday’s closing ceremony. After spending the last four years training at Michigan and the past two months sequestered with the rest of the United States Olympic swim team, Phelps said he was looking forward to returning to his hometown, Baltimore, and settling back into his old life.

“That’s what I want,” he said. “As close to that as possible.”

Phelps’s public profile has changed so dramatically in the past week, is it realistic for him to expect his life to remain the same? “I have no idea,” Phelps said. “I’ll be able to answer that question when I get back there and see it firsthand. I have no idea what it’s going to be like.”

He sounded determined not to lose himself in the celebrity scene. “I’m going to live my life the way I always have,” he said.

Phelps is willing to make a couple of exceptions. He said he would love to hang out with Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, two people he has never met. Phelps is drawn to both because he wants to be like them. His long-term goal is to have the same impact on swimming that Jordan had on basketball and Woods had on golf.

An avid card player, Phelps said it would be cool to participate in the World Series of Poker. “My game is a little off right now,” he said, “so I’ll have to start improving it a little bit.”

After the 1972 Olympics, Spitz posed for a poster in his swimsuit, wearing his seven gold medals around his neck. If there is a similar photo shoot in Phelps’s future, he has not seen the schedule.

“I have no idea,” he said. “I just woke up this morning and did a bunch of interviews. I’m just trying to get everything situated, recover and all that stuff before everything starts taking off again.”

The way his popularity has skyrocketed, it may be awhile before Phelps returns to earth.
